Recently I became aware that the internal mailing lists of one of the major social networks could be subscribed to by anyone who knew the addresses. Many of the addresses were easily guessed and once known email commands could be used to obtain all of the available lists. Given the nature of information that was being discussed on these lists it could have led to a major breach of company and user security. The company quickly secured their lists when it was pointed out to them. The lack of security was not surprising. Many companies that run internal mailing lists fail to secure their lists from being subscribed to by outsiders. If your internal mailing lists allow outsiders to subscribe without approval you are opening your company up to a breach of security.
